Arlene J. Mulder is Village President (Mayor) of Arlington Heights, Illinois, one of the largest and most vibrant suburban communities in the Chicago area. Following more than 14 years of service on the Arlington Heights Park District Board of Commissioners and the Arlington Heights Village Board, she was elected to her first term as Village President in 1993. She was re-elected in 1997, 2001 and 2005. Mayor Mulder is a tireless and enthusiastic advocate for Arlington Heights on the local, state and national levels. She has gained the respect of citizens and other elected officials for her talent, dedication and ability to effectively build consensus to address and resolve difficult issues and to implement practical solutions. In 1997, Mayor Mulder was elected by other local government leaders in the Chicago area to serve as chair of the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission, a regional commission created to help address the aircraft noise issues at the "World's 2nd Busiest Airport." She has been reelected to that position each year since and is now an internationally recognized leader on issues of aircraft noise mitigation. She won the prestigious 2005 Jay Hollingsworth Speas Award for her work on the issue of aircraft noise reduction. Arlington Heights and Chicago are the only cities to have won the award twice. That leadership also led to the Village's receipt of the National League of Cities 2000 James C. Howland Award for Municipal Enrichment and the American Planning Association 2001 Award for implementation of the Central Business District plan.
